University of Groningen is a highly reputable university,  popularly known for its extraordinary Academic prowess and performance, it is acclaimed for its academic teaching, research and learning.

The University was founded in the year 1614, it is one of the oldest and largest Universities in Netherlands and is situated in the city of Groningen, Netherlands.

University of Groningen is a recognized member of the notable international Coimbria Group of European Universities. The Coimbria group is an association of European Universities and was established in the year 1985 to ensure  high academic standard and excellence among universities in Europe. The group is made up of Universities that are involved in cross and multi disciplinary research institutions.

As at 2021 when this article was prepared, the University of Groningen has been in existence for 407 years.

At the moment, University of Groningen boost of 10 faculties, 9 graduate schools, 27 research institutes and centers, it offers over 175 study programmes.

The Groningen University motto is “Verbum dominilucernapedibusnostris” which means “The word of the Lord is a light for our feet”.

The current President of Groningen University is Prof. Jouke de Vries and the Rector is Prof. Cisca Wijmenga.

The University of Groningen is considered to be one of the top three research Universities in Europe, it has taken pivotal roles in the fields of Ecology, Astronomy, Chemistry and Material sciences, physics, Molecular Biology, Nonoscience,  Medical Science, Neuroscience, Sociology, Phylosophy, theology, Archaeology, Arts and Microbiology.

Rankings

According to the 2021 rankings, University of Groningen was ranked by Times Higher Education World as the best 79th University in the world, it was also rated by ARWU (academic Ranking of world universities) as the 72nd university in the world.

According to Webometrics, the university of Groningen holds the 42nd  position in world rankings.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

University of Groningen offers a wide range of many bachelor’s programmes to choose from, international students have a wide choice of  study programmes at their disposal.

The University has many degree programmes taught in English and several others that are taught in Dutch language.

In order for prospective students to be eligible for admission into Groningen university, certain criteria has to be satisfactorily met, these requirements are:

In order to qualify for admission into University of Groningen, your last education level must be equivalent to pre university education in Netherlands. Other international qualifications equivalent to VWO includes the following:

  • America High School Diploma
  • The British Examination Board
  • European baccalaureate
  • GCE A2- Levels
  • CAPE, in Caribbean territory
  • International baccalaureate

If your qualification isn’t listed above you can still apply, as application will be based on individual, prospective students should also note that additional requirements may be demanded.

Any intending student of University of Groningen should have a proficiency in one of the two teaching languages (English orDutch), students are therefore advised to go through the language requirements per faculty to know the teaching language of their course of study.

For programs taught in English language, students must present a proof showing that they passed an English proficiency test, the test can be waived for you if ;

  1. You are a native speaker and you have an English Secondary education in one of the following countries; USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada.
  2. You have completed a higher education in one of the above listed countries
  3. You have at least 3 GCE A2- Level Certificates
  4. Possess an international Baccalaureate with English as the language of instruction

Students should also take note that some programmes require specific subject requirements, and the necessary foundational knowledge for the course applied for.

If you are a non EU student and hold a residence permit for another EU country, you can pay the tuition of an EU student.
